  • Holiday Inn, Little Rock Rd, Charlotte NC

The 2017 Berlin Airlift Veterans Reunion will be held Wednesday Sept. 27 thru Saturday Sept. 30 in Charlotte, NC.

The C54 Spirit of Freedom will be on static display at Concord (JQF) on Wednesday Sept. 27th and Thursday Sept. 28.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about history and meet 22 gentle-men veterans will attend accompanied by family members, German VIP's and survivors of the great Berlin Airlift of 1948-49. As young men they went to Germany to fly the Douglas C-54's carrying everything except water to the 2.4 million West Berliners land blockaded in the politically divided city. Surrounded by 200,000 Russian troops waiting for the British and American airlift to fail the citizens endured hardship, starvation, cold and fear. Many lived in the ruins of a city that was bombed for three years by many of the same airmen that now delivered the essentials of life for their survival.

With an airplane landing every 3 minutes Berliners paid little attention to the never ending barrage of propaganda by the Russians telling them that the allies were going to quit the airlift. The blockade lasted 11 months but the airlift lasted another 4 months to assure the city's survival. These veterans flew or maintained part of the 257,569 flights into Berlin.

This reunion will be headquartered at the Holiday Inn on Little Rock Road, Interstate 85 exit 33.  A welcome reception will be held on Wednesday Sept. 26th beginning at 6:30 PM with a meet and greet of local officials and some business leaders. Talks will be short so everyone can meet and share stories. The public is invited to attend and meet these heroes.  The military service time for some of these men go from WWII, Berlin Airlift, Korea War and Vietnam. The Berlin Airlift was the most significant non-combat military operation of the twentieth century and the worlds largest humanitarian effort.

The reunion banquet will be held at the Holiday Inn on Saturday night with cocktail hour beginning at 5:30.  To order tickets at $ 33.00 each contact Eddie Ide, Reunion Chairman at bavareunion2017@yahoo.com or by cell phone to 828-238-6297
